Well, it had to happen. In order for Humiblog to remain cutting edge, I had to break new ground and get into video editing a bit. For this first and introductory clip, I decided to pick up a drugstore cigar and do a “Cigar Basics” for those starting to get interested in the art of cigar smoking as well as new aficionados. I mean its one thing to see a picture of a cigar and its another thing to see how the smoke progresses from cut to nub.
Now, why a drugstore cigar? Ha ha… I just had to see how the video would turn out; plus I was inspired by our friend Tom Olson over at Keepers of the Flame. It was pretty hard to find a true drugstore cigar here in Spain, so for this first video I found a one Euro Hondurian robusto named KIOWA. Alright, now here’s how it turned out:
I must say it was a lot of fun doing this, and I hope to bring a few of my favorite cigars to this format. As always, I appreciate all comments. Who knows, we may be sitting on a hot new trend here…
Cheers!

Just super. I really enjoyed watching your film and I can imagine you had a whole lot of fun selecting the music for the short.
Funny as many “how to light a cigar” pages that I’ve read none bothered to throw a movie up there to show how toasting is done. Which your film does in spades.
Since I am a newbie I’d actually like to see in greater detail just where you cut your cigar.
Again, great video

Great ! Thanks for the time and effort.
I have smoked fine cigars for years on and off but only recently discovered how cheap the non cubans are if shipped from the USA.
Hense I now smoke daily, trying to find something decent enough to ‘done to the nub’ - at least I think I have said that properly.
To be truthful, your vid helps with the basics that we so easily forget or just dont bother with when buying the cheap imports from Nic,Dom Rep etc.
Thanks again - Roy.R (UK)

What kind of country is Spain anyway? No Dutch Nasties? No Pineapple White Owls? C’mon, EZ. There’s gotta be a 7-11 around there somewhere. Here, I’ll help. “Donde esta la Siete Once? Me gusta el Philly Blunt! y el Slurpee…mmmm.”
In any case, well done. And a toe-tappin’ tune to boot. Excellent job, even if that cigar did look leagues better than a real drugstore stogie.

Just a point I should have mentioned before.
As the assembled throng aka “Us lot”, are not all Americans but more International in our languages, views etc ; you might like to change the part of the video where it says “I love my ring”.
In some parts of even the USA and definately on the grotty Island I was born in known as GB, your ring is also your *** CENSORED ***
Better safe than sorry,

Wow. Humiblog has just taken on a whole new dimension. “Ring gauge” will never be the same. :)
Roy, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar!

I want to thank you very much for the video! I have been looking for a guide “How to light a cigar with a torch lighter?” many times but I wasn’t successful. I always found only a text usually without any pictures.
Do you think it is be possible to make also a video “How to light a cigar with matches?”. It would help me and many cigar smokers around the world too.

Roy, that was funny!! You know, my ring is featured in almost all my photos here.
While I have occasionally used matches to light a cigar, I usually use my torch; though purists would certainly object to it. I’ll think about that. I’ll have to order some Philly Blunts from the US . . .

[…] This belicoso is a very robust smoke, but it’s not overpowering. You will definitely want to enjoy a full meal before sitting down with this one, and a strong refreshment is advised. I pulled an old bottle of Oban from the back of the liquor cabinet — Edan’s video reminded me I still had a couple drams left in the bottle. (And a better cigar to accompany it.) Published in: […]

That was the first proper video I’ve seen showing toasting with a torch lighter. Very nicely done.
I can’t believe you took that stick for a ride all the way down to the nub!
Since you’re into video now, I’ve made my own “Cigar Tribute” video here you’re welcome to check out:

Keep them coming!

Thanks so much for providing a video on cigar basics. It was very informative as it was much needed. I have a very important business meeting coming up soon and didn’t know a thing about cigars until visiting your site…! Great job!
Sincerely,

Adrian, I’m glad you could find the site helpful. A business meeting with cigars huh? Sounds like my kind of meeting, ha!

Thanks for the video. I think some of my bad experiences with cigars has come from poor lighting. Watching how you were able to completely light the cigar by ‘warming’ (without drawing) was very helpful. I was doing more of my lighting by puffing and lighting, which resulted in a bitter or harsh taste and poor burn.
Keep up the good work.

warming?, I meant ‘toasting’

So I guess the lesson here is, bring your own? haha.
Nice video, I’m a match-lighting fan myself, but I’ve been using torches for a bit and find them to be just as good if used patiently. Afterall, the idea is to put small amounts of heat energy into the end of the roll to create an even layer of embers. How that energy is produced really doesn’t matter.
